Re: Confused.

Hi and welcome to the board. :D The problem comes in when there is a lack of the watcher. The ego doesn't like to be seen as jealous or petty, or to feel the pain of such things. It will try to use spiritual practices to avoid pain and always appear to be in control of everything. True feelings nee...

Re: The bird on your shoulder

I think, what we call "joy" or "peace" can be compared with a bird, that puts itself on your shoulder when you don't try to catch it. As soon as you grab for it to retain it or to get it when it isn't there, that delicate bird will fly away or keep aloof from you. But as soon as you keep your hands...

Re: Surrender - I don't get it

The clearest description I've found so far was by Byron Katie. (paraphrased) Which is more empowering? 1. I wish I hadn't lost my job. What am I going to do now? 2. I've lost my job. Ok, what can I do about it? The first one is resistance and hopelessness. The second one is an acceptance of what is,...

Re: social interaction

I can only think of 3 possibilities based on my own experiences. The first may sound harsh, but it's something that Vernon Howard once said during a Q&A that has stuck with me and helped me many times. 1. I know that other people can really do no harm to me, because I'm outside the forms. Do you kno...

Re: Forum Name

I'm not really sure what you mean by awakening/enlightenment as a forum. Do you mean the actual awakening experience, like the one Eckhart had? Can smaller experiences like seeing through an illusion or transmuting a pattern be included? At this point, based on what I think you want, I would suggest...

Re: Confused.

Hi and welcome to the board. :D When I read your post, I remembered some dialogs from Byron Katie's Work on relationships. The one that stuck out the most was about a woman whose husband had been having an affair. She still loved him but wanted him to stop the affair...he didn't want to. With Katie'...

Re: Alziehmer - Part II [ no debates please ]

There's a quote by Ram Das that I like very much. He said that a key part of healing anything is the decision to move forward rather than trying to regain what was lost. As long as the focus is on regaining, you're stuck in the past. What I would try to do is let the situation dictate where things g...

Re: Awakening causing physical discomfort?

I've had something similar happen a few times. There's a method called "Focusing" where you feel into a sensation and get a "felt sense" for it. You then try to describe it or use a phrase that the sensation would want to say. The feeling then changes and needs another description. This goes on unti...

Joe vs. the Volcano

The thread about "Way of the Peaceful Warrior" got me thinking back to another movie about awakening.

"Joe vs. the Volcano"

Anyone else seen it?

Re: Way of the Peaceful Warrior - Dan Millman

Both are good, but the movie only covers about half the events in the book, and not in as much detail. One of the interviews on the DVD said that the movie was "designed" as a good sports film rather than a spiritual teaching film. Still a good read/watch. :)

I haven't gotten any emails from the new board.

On a side note, I saw this on the main screen:

Re: the void

Great post, Larryfroot. I only have a couple of things to add. Vernon Howard said that "everyone spends their lives trying to escape an unwanted sense of self." The "seeker" becomes the last hope for relief. "If I become enlightened, I won't ever have to feel this pain again." From what I've read an...
