Re: Ego Vs Personality

Thanks, E2B. It's hard to believe I wrote that almost 8 years ago. I see I did suggest that personality is a valid collection of styles, habits of being. I guess it is a way of not stigmatizing the observed relative self in action and reflection. But the experience of the Absolute is very nonlocal. ...

Re: Ego Vs Personality

Egos exist - they are only "disastrous" if you do not accept that fact. Personalities are different, egos often conflict. Egos developed about 7,500 years ago according to Gary Weber. Here is a sample of his blogpost: http://happinessbeyondthought.blogspot.com/2018/05/self-inquiry-vs-egosis-how-it-w...

Re: Ego Vs Personality

Welcome axetenuz!

I completely agree that egoic excesses have had disastrous consequences, even today, for sure, and not harmless. This is an Eckhart Tolle forum, so I try to use his thinking as a starting point.

Re: I refuse to surrender to what is. Isn't it giving up?

Actually this is a comment on the comments. How caring and helpful! I joined this forum 12 years ago with some big needs and deep curiosity...got immediate help. Reading these fine comments reminds me that the same support is still available to new members who are suffering...how completely beautifu...

Ego Vs Personality

“[ego] means a false self, created by unconscious identification with the mind.” That’s Eckhart Tolle on page 22 of PON. Most of his work deals with establishing a true identity transcending this “ego” that is found by dwelling in the present moment, and experienced nonmentally. This true self has b...

Welcome Sunlaien! Yes, ET was a watershed for many, certainly including me. And now you get to face a different dilemma, unfairly summarized as "self vs. Self." Or, the relative disorders of personality and psyche vs. the shifting of identity to a new sense of Being. An excellent place to start for ...

Re: Wonderful video explaining non-duality

Thanks, rt!!! Swami Tadatmananda is enjoyable and clear. As a former computer scientist, and Westerner, he is very accessible, and his teacher Swami Darayanda Saraswati was delightful (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMGb7FKffRc)! And this group was primary in Gary Weber's spiritual development. Andy

Re: How can I help my girlfriend "get it"?

Welcome Johnny! You have touched on one of the more challenging elements of awakening. It casts the ego into a new role as a "provisional identity," far removed from the discovery of Self, which is, among other things, non-local and not created by well-meaning parents and society as we grow up. In h...

Re: What Am I - What Are You?

Thanks for this post, Albert. The classical paradox of "am I unique or is everything one?" has a "both/and" element: yes you are unique and yes everything is one (nondual). The art of living well is to embrace that paradox. There is Brahman and there is atman. The wave is part of the ocean. Form is ...

Great comment, Louis - I also highly recommend that book! Awakening does not mean losing responsibility in the relative world, which includes the world of feelings.

Re: Eckhart Tolle approach and friendships with others

Welcome Yenala! Big issue - and not well discussed by many, including Adyashanti. A powerful glimpse of the new identity as "Pure Awareness," not egoic 'little me,' can make people drop away from their normal ego-identity-based relationships. It's a form of "spiritual bypassing" (See John Welwood on...
