Re: Emerson

This is from Ralf Waldo Emersons essay Self-Reliance (1842) Man is timid and apologetic; he is no longer upright; he dares not say 'I think,' 'I am,' but quotes some saint or sage. He is ashamed before the blade of grass or the blowing rose. These roses under my window make no reference to former ro...

Re: Concentration vs. Presents

Rather consider a gentle resting in a present space where every "thing", including thoughts, can be openly observed. I really like how you described it, this is exactly what it feels like. Its as if you become an awareness that's outside of the individual experience, almost like you become the univ...

Re: Concentration vs. Presents

Mind is like a computer, it always anticipates input and then acts upon the data. Concentration is a mind function. When one is upset, the signal goes to the mind which tries to solve the problem with its algorithms (past experiences or solutions). Since mind can only focus on one thing at time, it...

Concentration vs. Presents

I noticed something when I was upset about a situation. I noticed myself thinking to much about it, which fed the active pain body more, so I focused that energy on Presents. I noticed it was much like vigilant concentration, the kind you use when focusing on an important task. I noticed my thoughts...

Re: Emerson

And I love this... "Who looks upon a river in a meditative hour, and is not reminded of the flux of all things? Throw a stone into the stream, and the circles that propagate themselves are the beautiful type of all influence. Man is conscious of a universal soul within or behind his individual life,...

Emerson

I recently started reading the writings of Ralf Waldo Emerson and was very suprised how similar the concepts were to Eckhart Tolle's. I wouldnt be suprised if Eckhart was very influenced by Emersons work. "Standing on the bare ground,- my head bathed by the blithe air, and uplifted into infinite spa...

Re: Tolle group meetings?

Hm.. none are active at the moment but there a plenty of "the law of attraction" groups active. Anybody know what this is? Iv only skimed the concept and it seems like it might be resisting the now to wish for the future like that.

Re: "You" can never be in the present moment

Oh yes that makes perfect sense. I thought you were refering to the real "you", but yes if the ego you is active through thought you cant possibly in the now. I was sugesting mabye thats what Eckhart ment when he says "you be in the present moment" or something like that.

Human conciousness

An interesting thought came to my mind about humans compared to other beings. I recall eckhart tolle saying that life before humans such as plants, animals, cells, live completely in pure being because they dont have a mind to interfer. I also recall him saying something to the effect that evolution...

Re: "You" can never be in the present moment

This is a good point. Mabye the "You" refers to pure awarness that is the true essence of existence that is present whether the ego filters it or not, and the "present moment" refers to the degree your true essence is aware of itself, the degree your true nature (pure awarness) is observent and outs...

Re: Why does smoking marijuana open up our senses so fully?

I am interested in this question about marijuana too. The first time I smoked marijuana I now look back and see it as a partial awakening experience. I felt like percieving reality at a different angle like that opened up a mental box I was in. The experience made me relize that life in a sense was ...

There is a full-length BBC documentary, available on the internet, describing how various famous mathematicians and philosophers that tried to understand the concepts of infinity and uncertainty ended up in mental hospitals, but also "somehow" proved that we cannot understand these concepts: http:/...

Re: Truth

I know, I just find old quotes that are early insights to this teaching interesting. I think to Newton the concept of truth was productive thought in science and philosphy. We can only directly experience the truth, well not experience it because we ARE it. Newton had the insight that the truth came...
