Yes, the thing is that when you defend yourself, you cannot just block the hits with your hands and stay there, you still get hurt, proper defence includes and requires attack, . Are there not some martial arts that are purely defensive, letting the aggressor burn themselves out by deflecting their...

Re: Bad Day...
Don't fight the negativity, accept it and live it!
I remember reading a book on watercolour painting in which I remember the line "if your painting is a failure, make it a glorious failure!"
Acceptance of the bad day or week should go some way towards finding inner peace...

Well put. The sun flourish on the water does it every time...! Sun on a winter landscape, that's another one...Onceler wrote: So many times when I am out running I see something, a tree, a leaf, a sunset, a sun flourish on the water, that stops my mind and opens me up to deep awareness.

Re: Exercise and Presence
Good idea to have a separate thread for this. I agree that running (and other aerobic exercises) is not only revitalising, but does help to clear the mind - a step closer to presence, if not presence itself... I do between 1 and 3 miles every morning. Picking a scenic route (eg:along the riverside) ...

I also feel that exercise helps to get you out of your mind and into your body consciously; how could it not? And anything that reduces thought is helpful in becoming more consciously present. Fully agree with this. Running round the snow covered park in recent mornings has enhanced this effect fur...

Re: Focus your attention on the Now...
And... if you are having, for example, a stomach ache, does the focussing on the now reduce/dissolves the problem of having pain? Or maibe the pain is not "considered" anymore as a "problem? However, you still ache... An analogy may help. Sleep may not be the same thing as being in the Now; however...

Re: Night out with work colleagues
Go, have one drink and leave after ten or fifteen minutes. Everyone will remember you showed up, then they will get drunk and not remember when you left. Party-pooper image will not occur. Developing this theme further, don't go, then tell them you did go, and if they were drunk they won't know the...

Re: Meet the natives--perspectives from simplicity
Now, just think what would happen to that homeless man if he knew his True Identity? He would be relased from the image he has of himself and he would be open to the Infinite Possibilites and Free from the 'concepts' he has concretized about 'who he is'----He would Be LIfted Up and Rejoicing in His...

Re: To Smoke or Not to Smoke ?
Try running, preferably barefoot (search Chris Mcdougall). The intense need for oxygen and a habit that limits your oxygen cannot coexist. It takes about 6 weeks to build new neurons through exercise that are resistant to stress. Believe it or not, I've been running every day for the last 25 years ...

Re: Once awakened, nothing to do
I do enjoy being at the present moment and doing simple things in life, but I feel I came here for something more than just washing dishes. How about bleaching the sink ? A re-orienting of activities is likely, it doesn't have to be as simple as washing dishes, but it can be. In my own experi...

Re: Once awakened, nothing to do
There is an ancient set of pointers from the Zen tradition: The ten bulls of Zen 1. In Search of the Bull (aimless searching, only the sound of cicadas) 2. Discovery of the Footprints (a path to follow) 3. Perceiving the Bull (but only its rear, not its head) 4. Catching the Bull (a great struggle,...

To Smoke or Not to Smoke ?
Hi I have been dabbling with Eckhart and also one or two Buddhist / Zen books for a couple of years now, and occasionally believing I'm getting glimpses of "Being". An immediate practical issue I face is how hard to "beat myself up" for failing (so far) to stop my 10 a day cigarette habit. One voice...
