More teachers like De Mello

Does anyone know of any other teachers whose style and message is really similar to Anthony De Mello? I love his no-nonsense approach and his confidence in his message. This man was such a gift. I would love to have met him.

Re: Great talk by Adyashanti

I get all misty-eyed watching those scratchy YouTube videos of Anthony De Mello talks from the 1970's. I imagine to many, he appears a boring, Jesuit geek. I think he's incredible, and incredibly impressive! Man, am I glad you posted this. I had never heard of Anthony De Mello. I'm now on disc 3 of...

Re: Great talk by Adyashanti

I just listened to the talk about different levels of awakening. I swear sometimes it feels like Adyashanti is narrating my life. It happens very often that whatever he is talking about in the clip I am listening to is exactly what I am currently experiencing in my journey. In this case, it was the ...

Re: Strong desire to fail

Good points, treasure. I heard something from John Sherman that helped me understand these thoughts a little better. Roughly paraphrasing, he said that when you start deconstructing this framework you've built on false notions, things are bound to get a little wacky for a while. I think this is just...

Re: Where is the flaw?

Thank you again, Ashley. I agree, that is the correct answer. Also found this: Not knowing is never-ending. It’s not that after meditating for 20-30 years, you will know. After meditating for 20-30 years, if you are lucky – you will be like a new-born child, not knowing anything, looking at the worl...

Re: Where is the flaw?

The only one responsible for what you hold to be true, even if it's just a leaning toward what seems most likely, is you. No matter what you find to be likely true, there is always a greater and clearer understanding yet to unfold if you are open to it. Be patient, be curious, explore, consider, ch...

Strong desire to fail

First a little back story: When I was young, my parents always had trouble keeping jobs and paying the bills. I remember being in a constant state of worry and anxiety from a very young age, and I remember dreading becoming an adult and being responsible for all these bills that cause my parents so ...

Where is the flaw?

I find it difficult to grok the concept of non-duality, and "everything is one". To try to "prove" nonduality, I wrote down the basic assumptions I have made my entire life, which are: I am Jeffro, a separate person. I have a mind, I have thoughts, I have emotions, I have feelings, and I even HAVE a...

Re: Hey Everybody, let's write a haiku!

These thoughts are all lies.
I am so much more than this.
Why can't I see that?

Re: The mind is so strange...

Did you actually look at the 'old man'? Did you connect with his energy of compassion and willingness to see you and to connect with you? Did you feel the flow of gratitude and generosity? Did you ask (care) how he was? I forgot to address this. Yes, I looked at the old man and had a conversation w...

Re: The mind is so strange...

SmileyJen - Very interesting perspectives and thoughts. You make some good points. I would love to get to the point where I can respond to small talk with absolute honesty and turn it into a real conversation. I am so conditioned to responding with pleasantries and/or making conversations as short a...

Re: The mind is so strange...

SmileyJen - That is an interesting question. My guess is that my mind would have been consumed by re-living the interaction with the stranger over and over again. That's a pattern I've noticed with my mind. When I have a conversation with a stranger, I tend to play the whole conversation over and ov...

The mind is so strange...

Just thought I'd share an amusing experience I had this morning. I was sitting at McDonald's, enjoying myself, sipping a coffee and practicing present moment awareness. In front of me on my table was a blank pad of paper. Lately, I've been keeping this pad in front of me when I'm "meditating" or wha...

Re: Work-related anxiety and presence at work

Being present is being attentive to what is.. without any kind of analysis or conceptual knowledge. If you're in a work environment, then you should be attentive to work related tasks. This might be the key. I think my paralysis at work is because I'm giving my attention to my lack of motivation. I...

Work-related anxiety and presence at work

I would like some other peoples' perspectives on a challenge I face while at work. Through presence, I have learned an important thing about myself: My career and the opinions of my bosses/coworkers is a big source of anxiety and fear for me. I am constantly worried about whether or not I'm viewed a...
