Thoughts follow emotion or visa versa?

In this Video Eckharte talks about anger as an energy arising which can then control your thoughts. Psychology says the opposite ie that a thought arises and then the emotion follows. Is Eckharte saying that the emotion just arises for no apparent reason from nowhere? He did mention that it could be...

Re: Trapped by negative thoughts

Listen to what kiki says. His posts are masterful. He can explain it a whole lot better than I can. It's ok to be skeptical. Trust me. I am too very much so. Didn't mean to confuse you with the 'no body' thing, but you'll get it over time. Don't worry too much about it right now though. Thanks Enli...

Re: Trapped by negative thoughts

The point is that most people identify themselves with ' I am the one who is angry '. It becomes an identity. Yet, you are not angry. You are that which allows anger to be there. Anger arises and passes through the body and you are that, which witnesses it. There is no one to actually be angry. Jus...

Re: Trapped by negative thoughts

Ok, here's a simpler way to put it. When you feel unease, when you feel stress and you feel worry, anxiety or any other perceived negative emotions (aka suffering), these more often than not, arise because we want the present moment to be different than it already is. That's what resisting is. Let'...

Re: Trapped by negative thoughts

So what if your mind wanders off? So, what if you can't sit still or feel a number of sensations in different parts of your body? You're merely the observer of all this activity. It doesn't matter how many thoughts and emotions that come up during meditation, nor does it matter how many sensations ...

Re: Trapped by negative thoughts

Hey Adi, What kind of meditation do you perform? Hi enlightened, sometimes I do body scan, sometimes I do following the breathe and observing the coming and going of thoughts, and feelings. I also do some chanting and some mindful yoga. I find that I cannot do body scan without a guided audio. My m...

Trapped by negative thoughts

Sometimes I feel completely overwhelmed with negative thoughts to the point where I feel very scared, sad and helpless. This happened to me yesterday. I was cleaning my house and these thoughts kept coming into my mind. There were thoughts about house repairs that need doing and how I have procrasti...

Re: It's Simpler Than You Think

It may be helpful to explore your statement here. Is it truly accurate? It is fundamental to a perspective on life, so it's no small matter. 1. Is 'a mind' the same as consciousness or awareness? 2. Could mind just be a function of consciousness - that is having the capacity to think within the bro...

Re: It's Simpler Than You Think

Don't give up. My advice is to continue to meditate which will begin to create some space between thoughts. Those gaps aren't noticed at first because we are so used to being bombarded by thought stream, but eventually the gap begins to widen. In that space, in that gap between thoughts, awareness ...

Re: It's Simpler Than You Think

Yes, a body is here, but is it the "me"? For me, the body is part of the me If you stop and just reflect on your life carefully isn't it true that there is something that has never changed over time despite the obvious changes taking place in the body? I can honestly say that I cannot see any evide...

Re: It's Simpler Than You Think

What you are , Adi, cannot come and go. What you are must always be present. All of those are things that come and go. What you are is what notices all that comes and goes; that is always present. That is not a thing, it's a presence. Realize what that is and it's obvious that you are that presence...

Re: Being intimidated/ being scared of sex

When you're a virgin sex seems to be such a big deal. So much pressure to do it from our peers, media etc. If we dont do it and we are not very self aware we may end up feeling inadequate in the same way we do if we dont end up being successful in other areas of our lives such as career. The images ...

Re: It's Simpler Than You Think

Why isn't all of this kiki? Your thoughts, sensations, emotions, body and mind? Its here, it exists in this world, you can see it, I can see it. Is this not kiki?

How to wake up

I have been reading lots of eastern spiritual philosophy such as Buddhism over the last several years and also meditating lots, practising mindfulness, chanting and doing yoga. Everything I read including Eckharte Tolle's books talks about this practice of recognising what we are not such as saying ...
