Re: Shifting attention from thought

Here's an example: "No, no no!, I don't want to think that thought.....get it away from me. Let me look at those pretty flowers as that thought is too scary for me!". That's avoidance Here's another example: These bloody thoughts are bothering & irritating me, I've been told by others that shifting...

Re: Shifting attention from thought

Yes, lets agree to disagree. As we both have opposing views. But can I say no I'm not tied into my definitions, I'm just trying to have rational discussion.... shifting intentionally away from something that bothers you is avoidance. It's clearly not exposure is it? If we cannot even agree on the mo...

Re: Shifting attention from thought

Purposely shifting your attention away from bothersome thoughts is still an avoidance strategy. The very definition of avoid is to keep away from or stop oneself from doing (something). If you try to stop bothersome thoughts by shifting attention, you still believe they're causing you a problem. You...

Re: Shifting attention from thought

We could probably talk about this all day. I'm finding it a little difficult to follow your argument, you seem to contradict yourself. You start out challenging my view, but at the end seem to agree that a thought can act as both as the stimulus & a response to a stimulus. Yes, our thoughts are link...

Re: Shifting attention from thought

Did you read the article I linked to? Thoughts can act as both a response and a stimulus. That's how panic arises. The cycle feeds into itself. I don't agree that you can't resist thoughts, of course you can. Perceiving a thought as bothersome is resistance or opposition. To say thought has zero mea...

Re: Shifting attention from thought

After re-reading your responses and trying to better understand your position versus mine. I'm treating bothersome thoughts as - a potential fear stimulus. Whereas, your treating bothersome thoughts as something you don't need to identify with, by merely observing it as oppose to believing it. Where...

Re: Shifting attention from thought

If you treat bothersome thoughts with a suppression technique (shifting attention to body awareness). Is this not indulging in the thought as a problem to overcome or fight against? ...That wouldn't be approaching it from a position of non-resistance first as you suggest. Your actually treating the ...

Re: Shifting attention from thought

I'm breaking this down into a simple algorithm. The algorithm is governed by an output cycle & an input cycle. The output cycle always feeds back into the input cycle whenever we use resistance, avoidance, suppression, repression etc. If we choose acceptance, exposure, embracing, etc the output cycl...

Re: Shifting attention from thought

If you are trying to stop or even alleviate bothersome thoughts, there in lies the problem! Any resistant (suppression or repression) to your thoughts in any manner is treating it with subtle fear or danger. This will cause positive feedback loop to form, in other words, more troublesome thoughts......

Re: Surrendering and accepting feelings of dread

Life is always constantly changing & moving in a field of flux. You seem to be getting yourself stuck in a moment. Just accept any feelings of dread & then move your focus on some current goals or maybe start setting up some fresh goals. But moving on is better than dwelling on the momentary dread. ...

Re: state of Presence comes several times a day. Any advice?

Kiki, What you're saying in another way is that our execution attention which is control of seeing or attending to something afresh (present moment) or without feedback (mental analysis or labeling).... is the purist state of being. Its widely accepted that analysis of things too often can lead to p...

Re: Frank Kinslow

Onceler I'd put his quantum entrainment into the category of complete rubbish! Don't waste your valuable time on it. Classifying executive attention (focus) as some kind of pure awareness which is tapping into quantum waves via a mysterious entrainment method has no scientific basis whatsoever. Anyo...
