Meditation for beginners

Hi all,

I wonder if any of you can suggest a resource for beginning meditation? I realize it is highly individual as far as preference goes, but it just seems that there are so many options out there and it would help to have some suggestions to begin to experiment with.

Thank you!
Jen

Re: Is ignoring thoughts actually resisting them?

All of your responses are helping me right now. I appreciate it. I even printed this page out so I can refer to your insights when my mind gets more frazzled.

Re: Is this regression?

Thoughts and thought constructs can be deeply ingrained and quite habitual. We've been trained into them our whole lives. Recognition of thought identity however, and realization that life is more clearly perceived from the perspective of aware conscious presence, is a first great step of awakening...

Re: Does it ever feel forced to you?

It sounds like you have or are currently experiencing the "death" of the ego. I imagine this was a process (and still is!) I mean, it takes time, right? I admit, at times I get concerned that if it isn't happening for me NOW that it means it never will- that for some reason I am not capable (for wha...

Re: Does it ever feel forced to you?

Actually, I can feel/sense the ego trying to fight to stay strong. It's as though I am hosting the battle in some way. Like the ego is saying, "Let me in! Let me through! I want to consume you!!!! Leave me the hell alone and let me have my way!" Almost like it's having a temper tantrum. I found toda...

Re: Does it ever feel forced to you?

Yes, I agree- just going back to the basics is what I am now resorting to in these frenzied moments and stretches of time. Just breathing in and out and focusing on the visuals in front of me. I find I have to do this a LOT during any given day. But I imagine that the more I implement this into my d...

Re: Is ignoring thoughts actually resisting them?

ahhhh! So, now my question is: if the movie simply won't end, can I just leave the theatre and go do something else? Do I have to watch it until it finally ends (which often feels like NEVER). If I get bored or annoyed with the movie in midstream, is it okay to turn the damn movie off and go watch s...

Is ignoring thoughts actually resisting them?

When having a recurring or obsessive thought, Tolle says to take the thought, as it approaches and simply watch it- to observe it without judgment. This makes a great deal of sense to me. However, I have an incredibly hyperactive mind that has always been consumed with intrusive and seemingly nonsto...

Re: Is this regression?

mega_nix,

Wow. Interesting. So, perhaps these past few days of "regression" are actually progression in disguise to some degree?

I can feel the ego fighting like hell. At least I know it's existence or power is being compromised if it is fighting with such gusto!

Is this regression?

Hi, I have been enlightening myself with Tolle's books for awhile now and about 2 weeks ago started applying a great deal of my energy towards the teaching and such. As the days have come and gone I have gained a great deal of insight and awareness. I feel I am learning and awakening more and more i...

Re: Dissolving guilt

Lots of great insights here from all of you. I know they will be very helpful. The guilt issues are so heavy and toxic for me and breaking them down into pieces I can understand and work with now feels possible. Thanks very much.

Re: Subconscious mind activity

What Golf said about that "haze" and the heaviness in the chest and abdomen, wondering "why can't I feel light and happy?", being in the midst of nature and beauty and not necessarily feeling as peaceful or present as he wants because of that lingering mind haze and the veil that fogs being complete...

Dissolving guilt

I feel that guilt begets more guilt which then fuels the ego and perpetuates the vicious cycle. So, regardless of how extreme or consuming the guilt is, how long ago the behavior that triggered the guilt was executed, whether or not the behaviors occurred decades ago, three months ago or yesterday o...

Re: Why do I feel guilty about looking forward to something?

Golf, Thank you for your input. I think I have been obsessing about not giving myself license to feel what I feel at times (longing to be somewhere else or be doing something else etc) and the ego judges and condemns me for feeling that way. I like what you wrote: 'Try to allow yourself to want time...
