How do you know when it's the ego talking and when it's more than that? For me personally, sometimes it's obvious but many times, after I get drifted with a thought and "come back", I ask myself was it me or the ego.
Something for consideration. Just my take, but I find it helpful. If you know a difference between 'me' and 'the ego', then you know that ego is both.
Ego lives in the identifying dialog, the stories we spin. Self, the aware consciousness that we are, needs no identifier. Ego is created through the belief that 'I am this', or 'I am that'. Self is understood simply as "I Am". The knowing, not the words.
Our true self is best recognized and understood within silence of mind, not dialog. Simply rest and perceive what it is to Be. Feel it. That is a primary purpose of meditation. To gain experience and anchoring in our true nature.
The dialogs we have within ourselves, whose goal is to understand our own true nature, can be helpful at climbing the ladder of knowledge of understanding. But they are not the understanding itself. That is known in silence.
Terrific response, WW!

Simply and profoundly put.
