Just watched a good documentary - which explained why people with Anxiety disorder and OCD get stuck doing the same patterns over and over again even though they know it's not good for them.
It has to do with the way neural networks (feed-forward) in our brain strongly weight or reinforce the same pattern. The neurons that fire together wire together. Sufferer keep repeating the same behaviours which keep the neural network persisting with the same dysfunction.
If sufferers can learn to change behaviours (back-propagation) , plasticity allows the neural networks to alter the weighted connections and stop repeatedly strengthening the dysfunctional behaviours.
Sufferers need to realise the importance of exposing themselves to the things they try to avoid in order to promote plasticity in the brain. The therapy is called self-directed neuroplasticity.
