would my interpretation of what another person said or wrote be projecting?...would I have to be "in my head"?

Projection is a psychological defense mechanism in which individuals attribute characteristics they find unacceptable in themselves to another person.

The way I see it is that it could be, depending on what you do with the information you're getting. It could also be an exploration of the possibilities of another's perspective and be quite valuable. The exploration of ideas and possibilities is key to moving forward in an evolutionary context of consciousness. Making judgments on another's ideas can be more problematic in that such judgments can be constrictive to one's perspective. Again it depends on how you perceive and acclimate to the information.
