The Gospel of Thomas

Post by Craig » Fri May 02, 2008 5:43 am

It's been mentioned by more than a few spiritual teachers, but if you haven't looked at it already, locate a copy of the Gospel of Thomas. I remember trying to read and interpret it some months before, but I just couldn't understand it, and it seemed disjointed to me. But, when I re-read it just now, I understood nearly all of the passages, and recognized the immense beauty and power of Jesus' words.

Passages from the text:

"For God's kingdom dwells in
your heart and all around you;
when you know your Self
you too shall be known!

You'll be aware that you're
the sons and daughters of
our living Father.

But if you fail to know
your own Self
you're in hardship
and are that hardship."

* * *

"[The disciples] answered,
'Shall we, being as children,
come into His Kingdom?'

Jesus replied,
'Make the two into One
and the inner as the outer
and the outer as the inner,
the above as below,
the male and female
into a single One.'"

* * *

"His disciples asked,
'On which day will you
make yourself known to us?'

Lord Jesus replied,
'When you rid yourselves
of guilt and shame and tear off
your old rags and trample them
beneath your feet like children.'"

* * *

"He who understands all
but lacks Self Knowledge lacks all.

Be happy when you're
reviled and harassed;
but peace won't be found
if your mind harasses you at heart."

* * *

"His disciples enquired,
'On what day will
the Kingdom come?'

Lord Jesus replied, 'It won't
come through anticipation;
they won't say Look, it's hear,
or Look over there.

The Kingdom of Heaven
covers the Earth with glory
but mankind fails to see it!'"

Thanks, Craig -

I had not read that in many years...sounds eerily like non-duality.

That is beautiful, I especially like the first one:
"For God's kingdom dwells in
your heart and all around you;
when you know your Self
you too shall be known!

That could well be. I have a cheap book with some of the Gnostic Gospels in them, translated by Alan Jacobs. Being at the lower end of the price scale, I do not expect it to be of high scholarly calibre. The only thing I would suggest is that perhaps Jacobs added in the text with the disciples asking questions which were inferred from what Jesus says. My reason for suggesting it is that in some places, the questions help to anticipate Jesus' words, and make the text more followable.

Emptiness is the ground all words rise from...

Incipit: These are the hidden sayings that the living Jesus
spoke and that Didymus Judas Thomas wrote down.

1 And he said: Whoever finds the correct
interpretation of these sayings will never die.

2 Jesus said: The seeker should not stop until he
finds. When he does find, he will be disturbed. After
having been disturbed, he will be astonished. Then
he will reign over everything.

Please, please I heartily recommend the commentary on it by Osho - called 'The Mustard Seed'.

It really is wonderful and he explains it incredibly well.
