Music

Post by sevenworlds » Thu Apr 16, 2009 4:25 pm

There's not a lot of music that I can relate to but now and again I hear a song that catches me. Here's a few:

Keane - "Pretend That You're Alone" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2s-zUhNwIU

We are just the monkeys who fell out of the trees, we are blisters on the earth
And we are not the flowers, we're the strangling weeds in the meadow
And love is just our way of looking out for ourselves when we don't want to live alone
So step into the vacuum, tear off your clothes and be born again

Pretend that you're alone now and everything's gone
Just animal reflexes no one looking on
Forget about fashion, forget about the law
Pretend that you're alone now

I wonder what I'd do if I could wake up every morning with a clean slate
I'd burn through the cities and tear through the towns because there's no deals to make
So break out of the cages, the delicate structures we cling to all our lives
Because we are just the monkeys who fell out of the trees when we were trying to fly

Pretend that you're alone now and everything's gone
Just primal desire, no right and no wrong
Forget about the future, forget about blame
Pretend that you're alone now

She's not waiting for tomorrow
And she has no love in her eyes

Oh no, I want to come down right now
Pull over, I want to get out right now

Pretend that you're alone now and everything's gone
Just animal reflexes no one looking on
Forget about religion, forget about shame
Pretend that you're alone now
No numbers in your phone now there's nothing going on
Just primal desire, no right and no wrong
Forget about fashion, forget about fame
Pretend that you're alone now

Tim Booth - "Discover" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYVAaP-L5Vo

So you gave me a home and you gave me a name and you told me, "behave like the others"
Then you sent me to school, which was all about rules, and I learnt to pretend
And so I faked my way through school, and now I faked my way to you, in every face I look for signs of truth
And when you cry I take your hand, and when you rage I understand
Look in my eyes I'm not like all the others
Its time for you to discover... who I am becoming

I may look like a man and talk like a man but I feel like a man undercover
I don't feel real, I feel like a fake, in a moment I'll break
And so I'm prisoner to this guise, I'm in for life, but what's my crime?
I'm searching through my race to find some long lost tribe long lost in time
You fear that death will be the end, I fear that we'll come back again
I killed you once so lets pretend this time round we'll be good friends
So I've been abuser and I've been abused, I've been the Nazi and I've been the Jew
I was the user and now I am used to recover those who wish to discover... who I am becoming

Manu Chao - "Politik Kills" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unje2tP1XE4

Politik kills politik kills politik kills...

Politik need votes, politik needs your mind
Politik needs human beings, politik need lies
That's what my friend is in evidence... politik is violence
What my friend is in evidence... politik is violence

politik kills politik kills politik kills...

Politik use drugs, politik use bombs
Politik need torpedoes, politik needs blood
That's what my friend is in evidence... politik is violence
What my friend is in evidence... politik is violence

Politik need force, politik need cries
Politik need ignorance, politik need lies

politik kills politik kills politik kills...

Keane - "Spiralling" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-LZ7yH-JBM

I'm waiting for my moment to come, I'm waiting for the movie to begin
I'm waiting for a revelation, I'm waiting for someone to count me in
Cos now I only see my dreams, in everything I touch, feel their cold hands on everything that I love
Cold like some, magnificant skyline, out of my reach, but always in my eyeline now

We're tumbling down, we're spiralling, tied up to the ground, we're spiralling

I fashioned you from jewels and stone, I made you in the image of myself
I gave you everything you wanted, so you would never know anything else
But everytime I reach for you, you slip through my fingers into cold sunlight, laughing at the things that I had planned
The map of my world gets smaller as I sit here, pulling at the loose threads now

We're tumbling down, we're spiralling, tied up to the ground, we're spiralling,

Did you wanna be a winner? Did you wanna be an icon? Did you wanna be famous?
Did you wanna be the president? Did you wanna start a war? Did you wanna have a family?
Did you wanna be in love? Did you wanna be in love?

When we fall in love, we're just falling, in love with ourselves
We're spiralling, we're tumbling down, we're spiralling, tied up to the ground
We're spiralling

I favourited Keanes "Spiralling" on you tube some time ago, but Tim Booths song (above) is really excellent.

It isn`t easy to dig up songs which are pointing beyond mind. Three songs came to me, but again they`re more head music than anything. They appear to point towards awakening but not from an awakened place -

"Is it like Today" by Karl Wallinger

"Flawed Design" by Stabilo

"Awake" by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

To me some of Kurt Cobains lyrics suggest he may have been close to trancending ego. He was very much a musician "on the edge" which was evident is his writing and came through in his disjointed music. Here are two songs which stand out -

Breed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9sHoDrNEPg

I don`t care, I don`t care, I don`t care,
I don`t care, I don`t care, care if it`s old.
I don`t mind, I don`t mind, I don`t mind,
I don`t mind, mind, I don`t have a mind.

Get away, get away, get away,
Get away, away, away from your home.
I`m afraid, I`m afraid, I`m afraid,
I`m afraid, afraid, ghost!

Even if you have, even if you need,
I don`t mean to stare, we don`t have to breed,
We can plant a house, we could build a tree,
I don`t even care, we could have all three....

She said....

Something in the Way http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOAd7tDM8f8

Underneath the bridge
the tarp has sprung a leak
And the animals I`ve trapped
Have all become my pets
And I`m living off of grass
And the drippings from the ceiling
But it`s ok to eat fish
Cause hey don`t have any feelings....

Something in the way......
something in the way yeah .......

Two vids which appear to point towards probable realities/multidimensionality.

Yeah, quite possibly. Some artists seem to get close to that point but sadly most die/commit suicide, go mad or get swallowed up by success. When I hear songs by bands like Keane, it's encouraging that something real is starting to emerge through the music but we really need it breaking through to the artists whole way of living. It can be misleading. Does it just seem as if it's starting to come through in these times or has it always seemed that way? Tim Booth of James has written quite a few songs over 20 years that touch on this but how much has it changed his whole way of living?

Here's another song by Manu Chao in honour of Bob Marley - "Mr Bobby" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2v_XY-wsjs

Yeah I think this is a fair reflection of society also. We do a bit of this....then a bit of that, some meditation, a little more of this.... all the while failing to properly integrate the insights we receive into our way of life. Many are still hemmed in by the fear of what others (friends and family) may think. Things appear to be changing, but very slowly.

Drug use can put one into an awakened state; however, getting there through ordinary daily living is more delightful. Some musicians use too much drugs which tend to destroy ego control temporarily.

I agree Tony, there is no need for drugs. I read somewhere that taking lsd even once can cause much damage to the human psyche.

Sometimes lyrics take on a completely new meaning once there has been a taste of awakening. Here's an example from a song composed by John Hartford and made popular by Glenn Campbell in the 1960s. I liked it then and I like it even more now.

Gentle on My Mind

It's knowing that your door is always open
And your path is free to walk
That makes me tend to leave my sleeping bag
Rolled up and stashed behind your couch
And it's knowing I'm not shackled
By forgotten words and bonds
And the ink stains that have dried upon some line
That keeps you in the backroads
By the rivers of my mem'ry
That keeps you ever gentle on my mind

It's not clinging to the rocks and ivy
Planted on their columns now that binds me
Or something that somebody said
Because they thought we fit together walking
It's just knowing that the world will not be cursing
Or forgiving when I walk along some railroad track and find
That you are moving on the backroads
By the rivers of my mem'ry
And for hours you're just gentle on my mind

Though the wheat fields and the clothes lines
And the junkyards and the highways come between us
And some other woman crying to her mother
'Cause she turned and I was gone
I still might run in silence tears of joy might stain my face
And the summer sun might burn me 'til I'm blind
But not to where I cannot see you walkin' on the backroads
By the rivers flowing gentle on my mind

I dip my cup of soup back from the gurglin'
Cracklin' caldron in some train yard
My beard a roughning coal pile and
A dirty hat pulled low across my face
Through cupped hands 'round a tin can
I pretend I hold you to my breast and find
That you're waving from the backroads
By the rivers of my mem'ry
Ever smilin' ever gentle on my mind

Little Boxes by Malvina Reynolds

Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes made of ticky tacky
Little boxes on the hillside, and they all look jut the same
Theres a green one and a pink one, and a blue one and a yellow one
And they`re all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same

And the people in the houses all went to the university
Where they were put in boxes and they came out all the same
And there`s doctors and there`s lawyers, and business executives
And they`re all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same

And they all play on the golf course and drink their martinis dry
And they all have pretty children and the children go to school
And the children go to summer camp and then to university
Where they are put in boxes and they come out all the same

And the boys go into business and marry and raise a family
In boxes made of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.

Brainwashed by George Harrison

Brainwashed in our childhood, brainwashed by the school
Brainwashed by our teachers and brainwashed by their rules
Brainwashed by our leaders, by our Kings and Queens
Brainwashed in the open and brainwashed behind the scenes

God God God, a voice cried in the wilderness
God God God, it was on the longest night
God God God, an eternity of darkness
God God God, someone turned out the spiritual light

Brainwashed by the Nikkei, brainwashed by Dow Jones
Brainwashed by the FTSE, Nasdaq and secure loans
Brainwashed us from Brussels, brainwashing us in Bonn
Brainwashing us in Washington, Westminster in London

God God God, you are the wisdom that we seek
God God God, the lover that we miss
God God God, your nature is eternity
God God God, you are Existence, Knowledge, Bliss

The soul does not love, it is love itself
It does not exist, It is existence itself
It does not know, It is knowledge itself
"How to Know God" Page 130

They brainwashed my great uncle, brainwashed my cousin Bob
They even got my grandma when she was working for the mob
Brainwash you while you're sleeping, while you're in a traffic jam
Brainwash you while you're weeping, while still a baby in your pram
Brainwashed by the Military, brainwashed under duress
Brainwashed by the media, you're brainwashed by the press
Brainwashed by computer, brainwashed by mobile phones
Brainwashed by the satellite, brainwashed to the bone

God God God, won't you lead us through this mess
God God God, from the places of concrete
God God God, nothing's worse than ignorance
God God God, I just won't accept defeat

God God God, must be something I forgot
God God God, down on Bullshit Avenue
God God God, if we can only stop the rot
God God God, wish that you'd brainwash us too

Rebellion by The Arcade Fire - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNfWC4Sg ... re=related

Sleeping is giving in
no matter what the time is
Sleeping is giving in
so lift those heavy eyelids.

People say that you`ll die
faster than without water
But we know it`s just a lie
scare your son, scare your daughter.

People say that your dreams
are the only things that save you
Come on baby in our dreams
we can live on misbehaviour

Every time you close your eyes
Lies, lies!
Every time you close your eyes
Lies, lies! (x2)

Every time you close your eyes (x4)

People try and hide the night
underneath the covers
People try and hide the light
underneath the covers.

Come on hide your lovers underneath the covers
come on hide your lovers,
underneath the covers.

Hidin` from your brothers
underneath the covers
come on hide your lovers
underneath the covers.

People say that you`ll die
faster than without water
but we know it`s just a lie
scare your son, scare your daughter
scare your son, scare your daughter
scare your son, scare your daughter

Now here`s the sun, it`s alright!
(Lies, lies!)
Now here`s the moon, it`s alight!
(Lies, lies!)
Now here`s the sun, it`s alright!
(Lies, lies!)
Now here`s the moon, it`s alright!
(Lies, lies!)

Every time you close your eyes (x6)

Here's a classic rock song from Kansas with inspirational words.

Carry On Wayward Son

Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more

Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
I was soaring ever higher
But I flew too high
Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think I still was a madman
I hear the voices when I'm dreaming
I can hear them say

Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more

Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man
It surely means that I don't know
On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about I'm like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune
But I hear the voices say

Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more

This song puts a smile on a face.

Simon and Garfunkel- The Only Living Boy In New York

Tom, get your plane right on time.
I know your partll go fine.
Fly down to mexico.
Da-n-da-da-n-da-n-da-da and here I am,
The only living boy in new york.
I get the news I need on the weather report.
I can gather all the news I need on the weather report.
Hey, Ive got nothing to do today but smile.
Da-n-da-da-n-da-da-n-da-da here I am
The only living boy in new york

Half of the time were gone but we dont know where,
And we dont know here.

Tom, get your plane right on time.
I know youve been eager to fly now.
Hey let your honesty shine, shine, shine
Da-n-da-da-n-da-da-n-da-da
Like it shines on me
The only living boy in new york,
The only living boy in new york.
