I've always really liked the lyrics by John Frusciante (guitarist of Red Hot Chili Peppers_

I've got a million to choose from
A million ways things could be
In dull moments I feel like
There's a million options I see

The trouble is choosing one
The trouble is doing one

A slave in the fields one night
He's running along
Gets far enough to be a free man
And he's feeling so strong

That's how actions should be
Freeing
Step after step is our only choice in a walk
When we run at the mouth we jump back and forth

There's only one place I'm going
There's only one destiny
And if my mind tells me otherwise
Then it's a poor guide for me

All of the energy in life
Is nothing more than a spark in a fire
The whole course of time is the blink of an eye

Rain in the slums
Ah Yom
Into the cards
Ahm Yum
Rain in the slums
Ah Yom
Into another world
Ahm Yum

Terminal Star by Karine Polwart

You're a beautiful trace across time and space
You're a thing that once shone
And you still shine bright in the darkest night
Though you're already gone

You have travelled so far my terminal star in your coat so red
But I still don't know how I can watch a thing now
When it's already dead, when it's already dead

Just to reach my eyes you traverse the skies
For a hundred million years
I behold your power in this waukrife hour
Just before it disappears

All the stories in stones and in beakers and bones
All the salt in the sea are eclipsed by the might of your fading light
You're dying so beautifully, so beautifully

Weight Of The World by The Editors

Keep a light on those you love, they will be there when you die
Baby there's no need to fear, baby there's no need to cry

Every little piece in your life will add up to one
Every little piece in your life will it mean something to someone

You've fused my broken bones back together again
Lift the weight of the world from my shoulders again

Every little piece in your life will add up to one
Every little piece in your life will mean something to someone

You touch my face, God whispers in my ear, there are tears in my eyes
Love replaces fear
Fear

Every little piece in your life will add up to one
Every little piece in your life will mean something to someone

Always loved Stevies songs :D He looks so at home with the music. This rift was admittedly lifted by at least two bands - "Going To Town" by The Afghan Whigs and "Mr. Writer" by The Stereophonics.

Superstition by Stevie Wonder - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUXTG6Sh ... re=related

Very superstitious, writings on the wall,
Very superstitious, ladders bout to fall,
Thirteen month old baby, broke the lookin glass
Seven years of bad luck, the good things in your past.

When you believe in things that you dont understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition aint the way

Very superstitious, wash your face and hands,
Rid me of the problem, do all that you can,
Keep me in a daydream, keep me goin strong,
You dont wanna save me, sad is my song.

When you believe in things that you dont understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition aint the way, yeh, yeh.

Very superstitious, nothin more to say,
Very superstitious, the devils on his way,
Thirteen month old baby, broke the lookin glass,
Seven years of bad luck, good things in your past

When you believe in things that you dont understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition aint the way, no, no, no

Where Is My Mind? by The Pixies - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EE59Ex5Px4

Ooooooh - stop

With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
But there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself

Where is my mind (3x)

Way out in the water
See it swimmin'

I was swimmin' in the Carribean
Animals were hiding behind the rock
Except the little fish
but he told me east is west
trying to talk to me, coy koi

Where is my mind (3x)

Way out in the water
See it swimmin' ?

With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
If there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself

Where is my mind (3x)

Ooooh
With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Ooooh
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Ooooh
Ooooh

Gold in Them Hills by Ron Sexsmith - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DncGOPzkAns

I know it doesn't seem that way
But maybe it's the perfect day
Even though the bills are piling
And maybe Lady Luck ain't smiling

But if we'd only open our eyes
We'd see the blessings in disguise
That all the rain clouds are fountains
Though our troubles seem like mountains

There's gold in them hills
There's gold in them hills
So don't lose heart
Give the day a chance to start

Every now and then life says
Where do you think you're going so fast
We're apt to think it cruel but sometimes
It's a case of cruel to be kind

And if we'd get up off our knees
Why then we'd see the forest for the trees
And we'd see the new sun rising
Over the hills on the horizon

There's gold in them hills
There's gold in them hills
So don't lose faith
Give the world a chance to say...

A word or two, my friend
There's no telling how the day might end
And we'll never know until we see
That there's gold in them hills

There's gold in them hills
So don't lose heart
Give the day a chance to start

There's gold in them hills
There's gold in them hills

"Late For The Sky" by Jackson Browne

First heard this song in the movie "Taxi Driver". It sounds like a love song but much of the lyrics hit a deeper level.

The words had all been spoken and somehow the feeling still wasn't right
And still we continued on through the night
Tracing our steps from the beginning until they vanished into the air
Trying to understand how our lives has led us there

Looking hard into your eyes there was nobody I'd ever known
Such an empty surprise to feel so alone

Now for me some words come easy but I know that they don't mean that much
Compared with the things that are said when lovers touch
You never knew what I loved in you I don't know what you loved in me
Maybe the picture of somebody you were hoping I might be

Awake again I can't pretend and I know I'm alone
And close to the end of the feeling we've known

How long have I been sleeping, how long have I been drifting alone through the night
How long have I been dreaming I could make it right if I closed my eyes and tried with all my might
To be the one you need

Awake again I can't pretend and I know I'm alone
And close to the end of the feeling we've known

How long have I been sleeping, how long have I been drifting alone through the night
How long have I been running for that morning flight through the whispered promises and the changing light
Of the bed where we both lie; Late for the sky

Blowin' In The Wind by Bob Dylan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBoiWWc-kGE

How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
Yes, 'n' how many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head,
Pretending he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

These are the Fables by The New Pornographers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lt-wp7XN_2M

In coral and gray
In submarine chambers
One day
It swam for the light
The jewels that lit
The cities that float there
Cities in circles drawn perfect, complete
Holding the secrets on my street
My street, my street

So come in and play
The song of the siren
It's commonplace
You hear the voice rise
In one wave
And crash on your doorstep
Making the circle here perfect, complete
These are the fables on my street

Ten thousand dancing girls
Kicking cans 'cross the sky
No reason why
Why ask to pay yourself
For the call of the wild
You found this child
So raise him

And wind your way back
Come back to the river
The currents speed by
And hope the men fear
The hammer comes down
So hard on the evening
Cracking the dawn of your
Days are repeat
These are fables on my street
My street, my street

Heaven shook Hell
And down from its pockets
The ring in your bell
It fell through your hands
Hang at your feet
The doors that won't open
Marking the journey of our friends complete
These are the fables of my street
My street

My street, my street
Lay down in glory, you're not alone

My street, my street
Lay down in glory, you're not alone

I've always really like Enigma, and find many of the lyrics not just enigmatic, but very revealing...

These lyrics are mainly from my favourite Enigma album 'Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi', a genuine masterpiece...

BEYOND THE INVISIBLE
"Close your eyes
Just feel and realise
It is real and not a dream
I'm in you and you're in me.

It is time
To break the chains of life
If you follow you will see
What's being reality"

THE ROUNDABOUT
"Life is a wheel of changes
But changes are life
And someday we will have to say good bye
But our spirit will survive.

Love is phasing
Love is moving
To the rhythm of your sight
In the darkness I get closer
To the crossing point of life

Reason is lasting, passion is living
And dying is teaching us how to live."

PRISM OF LIFE
"I am hunted by the future
Will the future be my past?
Or is time a fade out picture
Of my everlasting cast?
Love is phasing
Love is moving
To the rhythm of your sight
We get closer
To the crossing point of life

(Latin chant: Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth.
Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua.
Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus... (translated Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are filled with Thy glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.) )

Let us try to live our lost illusions
They're the sun at night
If we don't we'll never taste
The spice of life
And when it seems that we're in a dead end street
There's no reason to cry
Cause we have a helping hand who's always aside
Forever light"

Talking Heads- Crosseyed & Painless
Although my tastes in music have changed a lot over the years, It's interesting to me how after nearly 30 years, I find I still enjoy some of my favorite groups. Talking Heads is one of them, yet some of their songs now seem a bit edgy and noisy to me, other songs of theirs have a fresh appeal. I found this great live version of "Crosseyed and Painless", on youtube it is very funky with some awesome guitar work by Adrien Belew, (probably not everyone's cup of tea).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6g8lFmsCXhg

The lyrics (below) seem more profound to me now, although their meaning is still a bit obscure. In my mind the song makes more sense to me when I replace the word "thoughts" for "facts". To me this sounds like a song about understanding the nature of thought, (we often consider thoughts to be facts); and how thoughts make confusing, meaningless attempts to run and direct our lives, and define our existence. Or perhaps the words are simply saying facts aren't ultimately true? And the end the line is "I'm still waiting". Isn't that what thought is doing?, it's waiting for a better moment; waiting for something to change so it will be happy.
Talking Heads- Crosseyed & Painless
Lost my shape-trying to act casual!
Cant stop-i might end up in the hospital
Im changing my shape-i feel like an accident
Theyre back!-to explain their experience

Isnt it weird/looks too obscure to me
Wasting away/and that was their policy

Im ready to leave-i push the fact in front of me
Facts lost-facts are never what they seem to be
Nothing there!-no information left of any kind
Lifting my head-looking for danger signs

There was a line/there was a formula
Sharp as a knife/facts cut a hole in us
There was a line/there was a formula
Sharp as a knife/facts cut a hole in us

Im still waiting...Im still waiting...Im still waiting...
Im still waiting...Im still waiting...Im still waiting...
Im still waiting...Im still waiting...
The feeling returns/whenever we close our eyes
Lifting my head/looking around inside

The island of doubt-its like the taste of medicine
Working by hindsight-got the message from the oxygen
Making a list-find the cost of opportunity
Doing it right-facts are useless in emergencies

The feeling returns/whenever we close our eyes
Lifting my head/looking around inside.

Facts are simple and facts are straight
Facts are lazy and facts are late
Facts all come with points of view
Facts dont do what I want them to
Facts just twist the truth around
Facts are living turned inside out
Facts are getting the best of them
Facts are nothing on the face of things
Facts dont stain the furniture
Facts go out and slam the door
Facts are written all over your face
Facts continue to change their shape

Im still waiting...Im still waiting...Im still waiting...
Im still waiting...Im still waiting...Im still waiting...
Im still waiting...Im still waiting..
.

Talking Heads- Heaven
Here is another old song that is coming to mind, because of what seem like profound lyrics.

I especially like the lines:

"Its hard to imagine that nothing at all
Could be so exciting, could be so much fun.

Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens."

(And I'll add: Heaven is Here Now, it's the Nothing that appears as everything.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRHnmJvWesQ
Talking Heads - Heaven
Everyone is trying to get to the bar.
The name of the bar, the bar is called heaven.
The band in heaven plays my favorite song.
They play it once again, they play it all night long.

Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.
Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.

There is a party, everyone is there.
Everyone will leave at exactly the same time.
Its hard to imagine that nothing at all
Could be so exciting, and so much fun.

Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.
Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.

When this kiss is over it will start again.
It will not be any different, it will be exactly
The same.
Its hard to imagine that nothing at all
Could be so exciting, could be so much fun.

Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.
Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.

Do you guys pick the music you listen to based on your spiritual beliefs?
