Do you guys pick the music you listen to based on your spiritual beliefs?
Not me, I just listen to what I like, what resonates. Some of it happens to have inspirational messages, like Kirtana, John Astin, Cat Stevens. Some of it might be called secular, classical, rock, pop, funk, jazz, blues, new age. It doesn't matter what it is, as long as it resonates and there isn't an attachment or identification to it. I find sometimes during the day music, lyrics or a group, will come to mind spontaneously, and I will feel inclined to listen to that. It's pretty simple and ordinary.

As James said what resonates with me, but mainly music which points beyond mind. Since you`ve mentioned spiritual beliefs, here`s an interesting vid I recently found relating to cults and mind-conditioning. "C-Moon" was written by an ex-Beatle.

Only by Nine Inch Nails - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgt_WDjbO0o

I'm becoming less to find as days go by
Fading away
Well you might say
I'm loosing focus
Kind adrifting into the abstract in terms of how I see myself

Sometimes I think I can see right through myself [x3]

Less concerned about fitting into the world
Your world that is
Because it doesn't really matter
(no it doesn't really matter anymore)
None of this really matters anymore

Yes I'm alone but then again I always was
As far back as I can tell
I think maybe it's because you never were really real to begin with
I just made you up to hurt myself [x6]
And it worked.
Yes it did!

[Chorus]
There is no you
There is only me
There is no you
There is only me
There is no fucking you
There is only me
There is no fucking you
There is only me

Only [x3]

The tiniest little dot caught my eye and it turned out to be scab and I had this funny feeling
Like I just knew it was something bad
I just couldn't leave it alone, picking at that scab
Was a doorway trying to seal itself shut
But I climbed through

Now I am somehwere I am not supposed to be, and I can see things I knew I really Shouldn't see
And now I know why (yea now I know why)
Things aren't as pretty
On the inside

[Chorus]

Chemical Brothers feat. Flaming Lips - The Golden Path

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlgsfLkAUVg

As I walked along,
the supposed golden path,
I was confronted,
by mysterious spectres.
they pointed to the graveyard,
over and yonder hill.
I paused in cosmic reflection,
confused and wondering,
of how I came to die.
Hmmm..
I was confused.
For if I was dead,
how and why,
did I die?
But I composed myself.
And decided I should face it
But I stood paralyzed,
on the supposed golden path,
and I was confronted,
by powerful demon force.
They said it was the devil,
and when he spoke,
his words flowed like glowing lava from the mouth of a volcano.
And I said: Help me lord!
I found myself in some kind of Hell!
But I did not believe in him,
heaven and hell,
world in opposites, kind of reality.
And I gained control of myself,
and I decided to press on.
And as I walked along,
the supposed golden path,
I was trembling with fear,
oh the lions and wizards yet to come.
I seen in the distance,
silver mountains rising high in the clouds
and a voice from above did whisper,
some shining answer from the moon.
Please forgive me,
I never meant to hurt you.
Please forgive me,
I never meant to hurt you.
Please forgive me,
I never meant to hurt you.
Please forgive me,
I never meant to hurt you.
Please forgive me,
I never meant to hurt you.
(As I walked along)
Please forgive me, (As I walked along)
I never meant to hurt you. (As I walked along)
(As I walked along)
(As I walked along)
Please forgive me, (As I walked along)
I never meant to hurt you. (As I walked along)
Please forgive me,
I never meant to hurt you.

Days Go By by Dirty Vegas - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAt7sawS8_4

You
You

You are still a whisper on my lips
A feeling at my fingertips
That's pulling at my skin

You leave me when I'm at my worst
Feeling as if I've been cursed
Bitter cold within

Days go by and still I think of you
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
Days go by and still I think of you
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
Without you
Without you

You are still a whisper on my lips
A feeling at my fingertips
That's pulling at my skin

You leave me when I'm at my worst
Feeling as if I've been cursed
Bitter cold within

Days go by and still I think of you
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
Without you
Without you

Days go by and still I think of you
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
Days go by and still I think of you
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
Without you
Without you
Without you
Without you
Without you

666 Conducer by BRMC - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6fhsaZPecA

(This ones for all you mods... and rockers :))

No one knows her name but they see her youth and use her (333)
She's feeling free and everything she sees is truth (999)
She's seventeen she's got everything she needs to lose
Yeah yeah yeah oh no

She's got everyone to help her on her way
She's got everyone to help her on her way
She's got everyone to help her on her way, down

He seems to know right where it hurts your pain, in vain (666)
He gives himself to you he's in your way (666)
And everything he does just seems a phase, insane (666)
Yeah yeah yeah oh no

He's got everyone to help him on his way
He's got everyone to help him on his way
He's got everyone to help him on his way, down

Everything you touch tears at your heart, apart
Of everything you see down in your soul never let you go

You've got everyone to help you on your way
You've got everyone to help you on your way
You've got everyone to help you on your way, down

You're a 666 conducer
How do you do the things you do sir
You're a 666 conducer
How do you do the things you do sir
You're a 666 conducer
How do you do
How do you do

Check out this beat from kid cudi. Now I know a lot of you guys are conditioned to not like rap  , but I have a feeling about this guy. He hasn't caught on huge yet, because people in the underground don't really know what to think about him. But he's something special. Listen to the lyrics obviously, different than anything Ive ever heard on the rap scene. Give him a shot...

Nothing Ever Happens by Del Amitri - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu4p-pWkP1A

Post office clerks put up signs saying position closed
And secretaries turn off typewriters and put on their coats
Janitors padlock the gates for security guards to patrol
And bachelors phone up their friends for a drink
While the married ones turn on a chat show

And they'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Gentlemen time please, you know we can't serve anymore
Now the traffic lights change to stop, when there's nothing to go
And by five o'clock everything's dead and every third car is a cab
And ignorant people sleep in their beds like the doped white mice in the college lab

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Telephone exchanges click while there's nobody there
The Martians could land in the carpark and no one would care
Close-circuit cameras in department stores shoot the same movie every day
And the stars of these films neither die nor get killed just survive constant action replay

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Bill hoardings advertise products that nobody needs
While angry from Manchester writes to complain about all the repeats on T.V.
And computer terminals report some gains on the values of copper and tin
While American businessmen snap up Van Goghs for the price of a hospital wing

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
They'll burn down the synagogues at six o'clock
And we'll all go along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Watched a fascinating documentary on PBS last night about the "theory of the music gene". Scientist studying muscians theorize that we all carry a music gene in us. They figure it is there to help our evolutionary purpose or the genome would have kicked it out long time ago. According to the program last night, the gene helps us synchornize our brain patterns so we can "tune" into the collective (similar frequency). Apparently this happens more often with muscians that feel that they have nothing to do with creating their music and that they merely move out of the way and let it express through them! Amazing stuff.

Yes great stuff Lucy!
Pretty telling that the isolated "tribe" who had never heard "classical" music before associated the common emotions (sad, happy, fear) to each of them that we do - the first time they heard them.

I love it when science catches up with what we intuitively know to be true already.

This is a song by R.E.M. called "You are the Everything" that always resonated with me and now that I've found this forum, the lyrics even have more meaning to me. The following link is OK but try to listen to the actual song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-3JA750Zxc

Sometimes I feel like I can't even sing (say, say, the light)
I'm very scared for this world
I'm very scared for me (say, say, the light)
Eviscerate your memory
Here's a scene
You're in the back seat laying down (say, say, the light)
The windows wrap around
To sound of the travel and the engine (say, say, the light)
All you hear is time stand still in travel
And feel such peace and absolute
The stillness still that doesn't end
But slowly drifts into sleep
The stars are the greatest thing you've ever seen
And they're there for you
For you alone you are the everything

I think about this world a lot and I cry (say, say, the light)
And I've seen the films and the eyes
But I'm in this kitchen (say, say, the light)
Everything is beautiful
And she is so beautiful (say, say, the light)
She is so young and old
I look at her and I see the beauty (say, say, the light)
Of the light of music
The voices talking somewhere in the house
Late spring and you're drifting off to sleep
With your teeth in your mouth
You are here with me
You are here with me
You have been here and you are everything

Sometimes I feel like I can't even sing (say, say, the light)
I'm very scared for this world
I'm very scared for me (say, say, the light)
Eviscerate your memory
Here's a scene
You're in the back seat laying down (say, say, the light)
The windows wrap around
To sound of the travel and the engine (say, say, the light)
All you hear is time stand still in travel
And feel such peace and absolute
The stillness still that doesn't end
But slowly drifts into sleep
The greatest thing you've ever seen
And they're there for you
For you alone you are the everything
For you alone you are the everything
