Glycine -

Do get a copy of Jac O'Keeffe's new book "Born to be Free." There is an entire chapter on Deep Sleep...I'd quote from it here, but am working on getting "Fair Use" permission from the publisher. But to paraphrase, the Self exists in deep sleep, but consciousness is gone...there are no thoughts and no thinker either...but you are not either of these, so...you must be Self... :)

A person is not a thing or a process, but an opening through which the universe manifests. - Martin Heidegger
There is not past, no future; everything flows in an eternal present. - James Joyce

Thank you Sighclone for suggesting the book.
That chapter did not answer my question, but I may have found an answer in "The Power of Now". ET mentions that one should "consciously enter" the sleep state.
