Spiritual and elevating quotes

Post by Seeker1977 » Sat Jan 29, 2011 4:53 pm

Hi,

Seeing the success/popularity of the Music of "the other side" topic I thought it might be a good idea to start a topic where we can share our favorite spiritual/elevating quotes (or any other quotes we like). So, if you like the idea, please share your favorite quotes with us. For start, I paste in some of mine:

“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.” (Buddha)
"It is better to travel well than to arrive." (Buddha)

"And in the end it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years. (Abraham Lincoln)

“The beginning of knowledge is the discovery of something we do not understand.” (Frank Herbert - Dune)
“Without change, something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken.” (Frank Herbert - Dune)

“That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” (Friedrich Nietzsche)

"God sleeps in the rock, dreams in the plant, stirs in the animal, and awakens in man." (Sufi proverb)

"Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get." (Dale Carnegie)

“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.” (Albert Einstein)
"The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once." (Albert Einstein)

“CYNIC, n. A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." (Ambrose Bierce)

“We are each of us in this world an angel with only one wing. In order to fly we must embrace each other.” (Unknown)

“Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure.” (George E. Woodberry)

"If knowledge is power and power corrupts how will humankind ever survive?" (Outer Limits)
"There is no sound, no voice, no cry in all the world that can be heard until someone listens." (Outer Limits)
"They say seeing is believing. But the true question is what do you believe you’ve seen?" (Outer Limits)
"Every life is a destination unknown, a journey of tragedies and triumphs that ultimately allows us to discover not only our world, but more importantly, ourselves." (Outer Limits)
"Along with futures we dare not imagine, come choices we dare not make." (Outer Limits)
"Mankind will be forever doomed to destruction, if we continue to ask for the truth but then refuse to listen." (Outer Limits)
"Even in the darkest corners of despair there are glimmers of light we call truth. But what if it is a light to which the rest of the world is blind?" (Outer Limits)
"In the struggle between life and death, sometimes survival is not the only way to win." (Outer Limits)
"Human history is marked by our desire to expand our boundaries. But what happens when our reach exceeds our grasp?" (Outer Limits)
"Sometimes, the best way to hide the truth is to keep it in plain sight." (Outer Limits)
"As long as an enemy is judged solely by his appearance, his victory is assured." (Outer Limits)

Cheers,
Attila

It's not specifically about enlightenment, but the poem "Desiderata" (which most of you have probably read) has some powerful lines.

These are my favorite:

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.

Here's some good Shakespeare. Sometimes I wonder if he himself was enlightened.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits, and
Are melted into air, into thin air:
And like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capp'd tow'rs, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve,
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made of; and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.

This is my most favorite poem, used to read and read it when I was a teenager. Will share in Facebook as I have an inspirational page besides my regular FB account, thanks for posting this.

Yes, Shakespeare was enlightened, or so I have heard from reliable sources.

I was going to copy and past my article, but figured a link is better. I write for Hubpages, and now and then I like to share inspirational quotes with photos, makes the message more uplifting. Of course, I included an Eckhart Tolle quote as he is a favorite teacher of mine.

Banish all doubt!

He asked the root question, which is perhaps the reason itself that the Universe is here at all ... I've posted about it before.

Great link Marie, fits right in the thread and worth following .. the pictures really do add to the quotes.

Thanks! And I see that Shakespeare has already been discussed in this forum, going to read the discussion.

Closing of "The Tempest", a work I am not that familiar with.

The passage seems to stand on it's own though -- he uses the ephemeral nature of the character's created during the course of the play as a point of comparison to the impermanent nature of all human life and civilization.

Just as the "lives" of the characters during the play draw to an end for the audience with the closing curtain, with their influence limited to the wisp of musing by those who were there which fade over time, so goes the lives of the audience themselves. Ponder the people who were there for the first performance.

one way or another, eventually there will come a time when noone will remember Shakespeare or when, in the extremity, humanity as we know it is no more.

Indeed.
