Alanis Morissette

Postby You_Live_You_Learn » Mon Jun 23, 2014 1:41 am

As a long-term fan of Alanis Morissette, I've noticed a lot of her lyrics deal with consciousness - gratitude, living in the present moment etc. She talks in interviews often about how peace/joy is her core self and all emotions come and go in front of it but she can always return to peace. I thought I'd post a few links to her songs/videos which most link with Eckhart Tolle related themes :)

Thank U video - seems like she literally sees consciousness at the end of this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOgpT5rEKIU

Edge Of Evolution - great song for people on this forum! 'Here I leave my story, I leave it in the dust, although this psychology's been entertaining enough…I have had my glimpses…I have had awakenings, non-abiding for the most part…In this sacred duality, the highs and lows…these aversions and these cravings push us beyond identity into pure awareness' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWmXNF29NoI

Guru - a really fun little song about trying to follow guidance and find your spiritual path - 'I eventually saw that your jewel was in my pocket/it had been there the whole time throughout my search'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by-01X6fq_U

I'll leave it at that and if anyone's interested I'll post some more. She is my favourite singer and I hear such consciousness in the tone of her voice and her lyrics, she really helped me turn onto the path which eventually lead me to Eckhart :)

I've got 2 of her albums on my ipod, and it's very interesting seeing how the lyrics changes so dramatically.

First time listening to Thank you felt like a breath of fresh air. A baggage had been dropped, and you can feel the coolness running through your body :) Lovely song!

Thanks for those links, I knew the song "Thank you" (big hit) but never really kistened to the lyrics, very inspired indeed, as well as 'edge of evolution' ... I read on wiki that "Thank you" was written after her trip to India, seems she entered in contact with some advaita teachings there ... she also refers to 'sacred duality' in her 'edge of evolution' ... she seems to be a nice person ... thanks for making me discover her deeper beyond her 'commercial' image (and success) ...

No worries at all, I'm glad to share her work on a forum like this. 'Edge Of Evolution' is such a great song isn't it?

'Permission' is another lovely song - 'I never stopped long enough to swim against the tides of old
And I was single minded too much to look toward this new true north…' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAE36H4Z7eU

She also very recently wrote a song in support of Marianne Williamson's campaign for congress in California. It is a beautiful call for living in the present moment and acting from a place of a consciousness! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG_5OyoZmJw

Enjoy :)
