Hi Guys

Postby jackpowers » Tue Dec 17, 2013 8:46 pm

23 year old recent college graduate.

I dealt with severe anxiety and an associated medical problem in college by abusing stimulants and practicing music. While I was cruising the internet and flying high, I would watch and listen to hours of Alan Watts lectures over and over on Youtube. Now it has been a year since I graduated University, I drink caffeine or alcohol on occasion and that's about it. But I still find these subjects captivating and very helpful.

I decided not to pursue a corporate career or more college. RIght now I prefer working in lower-paying, less stressful jobs. I want to become a good musician, and make a living that way if possible. I'm about half way through The Power of Now, and have watched many Eckhart Tolle videos on youtube. In the last few days I've found a lot of use in the "mini meditations" Eckhart mentions in some videos.

Hi Jack,

It sounds like we walked down similar paths (we also have the same name). I graduated a couple of years ago. My time at university was spent trying to overcome depression and anxiety by taking pretty much anything offered during a party. That and hunting out relationships to complete me. Those days are largely behind me thanks to realisations nurtured by following the guidance of Eckhart and a few others. I've not met anyone my age who's going through the same experiences so I'd be curious to know how things go for you.

Merry Christmas,

Jack

Is any job itself stressful or is stress a byproduct of the mind?

What types of jobs are considered stressful? What is it about a certain job that makes it more prone to stressful reactions in workers?

Could someone like Eckhart walk into a job considered stressful and do the work without the stress?

What is it about playing and creating music that is different to a 'corporate job'?

Peas, I'm starting to agree w you on this stuff and I'm just working whatever jobs make sense for me now.

Jack, thanks for the reply. I hope all the best for you too. Just spent the last seven days suffering the most repetitive, compulsive thoughts following a break up and tried to chase them away w beer and weed. I prayed constantly for serenity and I'm not sure if it helped but it is coming into my life now. And I'm not generally worried about the future or my relationships in the future. Not jerking off and not looking at porn is a huge help too haha

It sounds like you're coping with it well. Worry is just a byproduct of mind-made fears. Life is so much more enjoyable without it - as you no doubt know.
