What to do when you can't trace the source of the emotion?

I have a lot of buried trauma and what happens often is the feelings will start to surface but there's no thoughts or information attached so no idea of what the supposed cause of the bad feelings is. A whole lot of subconscious fear comes up in me, sometimes the mind attaches a story, but more often there's no story, just this feeling of dread/terror. How do you practice The Work in this kind of situation?

Hi Alchemizt. I can relate to your experiences of buried trauma. I'd say I have a lifetime supply.

Just spend time with the fear. Let it be. Become familiar with the feeling of letting the feelings arrive and go where they go without interfering with ideas or guiding with thoughts or playing the controller. Basically the body knows how to unwind itself when it's not in contraction supporting a personal identity. In my experience a memory may come, an image, or a word or just abstract shapes or colors. These are peripheral to simply allowing the unfolding of the energy. We can be attached to an idea or explanation. There is a familiar comfort in having an idea in hand. This can also be a way to cut short and suppress the fear. We can have a way to reflexively avoid this kind of fear by turning back to thoughts. I'd ask what is it like to not be so interested in explanations. Rather what is it like to be Ok with fear showing up and making it your special guest for the time. Let it be a bad guest. Let it set fire to your furniture. What is it like to let the energy play out as it does?
