"Pain Body" an unnecessary concept?

Post by andwar » Mon Sep 30, 2013 10:54 am

Is the "pain body" an unnecessary concept? The idea behind it is valid - most of us have painful thoughts & emotional memories formed from our past - but ultimately these all are just thoughts. Is it necessary to label these painful emotional memories - to call it something such as the "pain body?" Can we just look at them as they appear? Is it possible to be aware of these thoughts and emotions without giving them a name? Is it necessary to develop a definition - and to develop an intellectual concept about these painful thoughts and emotions? Does this help us to see what is happening at this very moment? Can we sit in silence - to sit with the momentary discomfort that these old thought patterns and emotions bring - without labeling - to watch - to be aware - without expectation or the need for intellectual understanding? Can there be awareness without labeling and definition - to avoid the mind's desire to conceptualize what is happening? Is this possible?

I agree with you andwar. I have little use for the painbody concept. That said, some find it helpful in getting free of their painful and debilitating identifications. If they perceive they have a painbody, then it can't actually be them. Rather, it's something they have that can be dealt with. They can recognize they are not their pain, nor the experiences that cause it. The point is to get to the recognition that we are consciousness in which all experience takes place.

Oh, you mean like not judging the thoughts or putting them all in a box and putting a label "pain body" on it?
