What does it mean to be a man?

Post by fortune » Wed Aug 13, 2014 2:42 am

I'm not sure what it means to be a real man and i'm not sure if a lot of other people do. I don't know why I am telling people this but I feel as if I am at that stage of a young man growing into a fully grown adult and i'm not sure how to embrace it. I've often thought and society has maybe conditioned this in me that a real man is a really courageous and authoritative figure, who never gives up and has no feminine characteristics and probably has a job like being in the army, a boxer or fireman. Of course being courageous and authoritative are beneficial characteristics but I don't feel that is really what it means to be a man. If somebody beats me in a fight or has a tougher job than me, does that mean he Is more of a man? I'm not sure.

Man is a form ... are you a form ? ...

The ancient famous syllogism example says:

Socrates is a man

All men are mortal

Hence Socrates is mortal ...

Indeed Socrates died ... poor Socrates ... he could have chosen another 'identity' less 'perishable' ...

To be a real man you have to drink beer, slap women's arses, watch and talk about sports, hide your emotions, spit, fight occasionally and drink more beer.

Good luck!

Hi fortune, I remember Eckhart saying once that the further along the spiritual path a person is the less difference there is between being male or female - other than surface appearance. So I think its more about being yourself, rather than living up to any image of what a man or woman should be. You mention courage, I think this is an important quality for both sexes.

Bingo, It's conditioning mostly.
Take what you like and leave the rest.

If—
By Rudyard Kipling

(‘Brother Square-Toes’—Rewards and Fairies)
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son! :D

Holy beJesus, RT. Going by Kipling's description, the world is likely woefully short of men. Whatever will the women of the world do??? :wink:

Well, one must have goals I suppose....

Hm. I see the point in all the answers so far. Nevertheless, I think there was one other aspect in the original poster's question which has not been fully addressed: What is the difference between a boy and a man? Of course, in the end it's both just terms and shape - but still, this doesn't prevent us from analyzing what's the "common definition" and what is the essence of what people usually refer to when they use those words.

For me, I think it's "maturation" and the ability to take one's life into one's own hands. Of course, this is somehow related to "courage". Because when you grow up, separating from your parents and starting to take responsibility for your life is something which actually does take courage. However, "How to embrace it?" is basically the wrong question. There is no right or wrong. The point is *TO* embrace it ;)!

As a female I can't answer that question directly, of course. But honestly hope that the beer drinking, fighting, macho, neanderthal types (completely unconscious) split off as another species from men who are trying to be more conscious; eg., compassionate, intelligent, aware. :shock:
