How to make decisions?

Postby sunflowerhk » Tue Oct 20, 2015 2:14 pm

How does an enlightened person make decisions (e.g. about changing jobs, leaving a relationship/marriage, moving to another location to live, etc.)?

Eckhart says listen to your inner voice, to your intuitions. He kept mentioning the example of himself in Europe having an inner voice about moving to the West Coast in America and he just followed that inner voice.

But, what if that "inner voice" is your ego talking?

For example, your "intuitions" tell you that ...you want to leave the job because you (your ego) are not respected or appreciated at work; ... you want to leave a marriage because your expectations (our ego) are not satisfied by your partner; ...you want to move out because your neighbour is too noisy, etc.

Is it still okay to make decisions by listening to such "inner voice"? How does one know if the "inner voice" is your ego or not? Or, does it matter?

It really doesn't matter what you decide to do, so long as what you decide to do doesn't matter.

It's really all about being at peace, living in nonresistance to life. So if you feel the urge to do something, or not do something, then notice whether or not it matters what you decide. It is always more important to notice how you feel about what you do rather than what you do. It is always more important how you do something, rather than what you do. Do everything consciously, or if you can't do everything consciously, simply accept how you feel about it.

Being human isn't an exact science, and often we don't know what to do, but being vulnerable and limited is the whole point to human existence. It means that we often have no idea what is best for us. If forces us to let go, to surrender, relinquish control and allow life to guides us where it wants us to be. Ultimately though, we are life, and being that life unconditionally is our goal.

The ego will always attempt to create an identity and a story around the identity. If it matters that you lose your identity and story, then that's the ego. But it also doesn't matter whether or not you have an identity or a story, we all do of course. The difference is it simply doesn't matter if that identity or story is lost or not. Ultimately, we all lose that identity and story anyway. So be at peace and enjoy. :D
