The Power of a Poem

Postby treasuretheday » Tue Apr 16, 2013 3:48 pm

I stumbled across this poem last night, and oh, how it spoke to me! It so echoes my personal experience, that I was in awe as I read it.

The Art of Disappearing by Naomi Shihab Nye

When they say Don't I know you?

say no.

When they invite you to the party
remember what parties are like
before answering.

Someone telling you in a loud voice
they once wrote a poem.
Greasy sausage balls on a paper plate.

Then reply.

If they say We should get together
say Why?

It's not that you don't love them anymore.
You're trying to remember something
too important to forget.

Trees. The monastery bell at twilight.
Tell them you have a new project.
It will never be finished.

When someone recognizes you in a grocery store
nod briefly and become a cabbage.
When someone you haven't seen in ten years
appears at the door,
don't start singing him all your new songs.
You will never catch up.

Walk around feeling like a leaf.
Know you could tumble any second.
Then decide what to do with your time.

This poem may strike many as unfriendly or cold! It won't echo in everyone, of course. Maybe the very thing you need to do is go to as many parties as you can! There is a time for small talk & junk food, but that time is not Now, for Nye, & she seems to suggest that our need for social contact is hiding a deeper need. Who she really wants to come home to in this poem, is herself. She invites us to carefully consider and choose what kind of life we are going to live.

Walk around feeling like a leaf...then decide what to do with your time. This is the deep spirit that runs through this poem. Far from being unkind, I believe it calls us to what really matters most in our lives.
Life itself is the proper binge.

Glad that tickled you, Rideforever. Next time someone says, "Hey Ride, we should get together!" you can offer that reply. (Try not to laugh though!).
Life itself is the proper binge.
