You can see already when you combine creativity with business that the 'business' elements take time away from the creative elements.Yea I was looking to do it on a commercial basis as well as for it's own sake, presumably one can do both. It just changes the game plan a little..
It is about the music just as much as the business side, after all if you want business you need a product of a reasonable standard..
Can one 'do both' yes, but if you think going into the music business will give you more time in the 'music' side of it, you're mistaken. The 'business' side of it will take up at least as much as your other earning (gardening) 'job'. Now some folks go, hmm well I don't want to spend my time on the business side, I'll get someone else to manage that side - so now one needs to earn enough to support two individuals or families!! more 'work' for profit, rather than creativity for its own sake.
I'm not saying don't do it, I'm saying be realistic about what it is you are doing.
What Eric is talking about - letting go and letting life.. is kind of the same as the Goethe quote -
Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.
So it seems, as you know and accept this ^ that you have no need to investigate self help any further. Although if web business is alien to you, guess where your attention will need to go next if you want a successful music business?
Of course, people do so all the time. There is a difference though because you are combining enjoyment > enthusiasm elements of allowing creation to flow through you, with 'means to an end' egoic doing. At different times they will be at odds with each other - there will be friction, there will be tension, there will be opposing priorities - and you understand this as a musician, it's normal.I was looking to do it on a commercial basis as well as for it's own sake, presumably one can do both.
When one does their craft solely for itself it has no 'measure' against it.
Commercial success is all about 'measure' and none of it is really any of your business (personally) while it all impacts upon your business (professionally).
It then brings into play the other 'sanity' notions ET speaks of in enlightened doing - states of acceptance, or of changing, or removing yourself from a situation. These decisions will be made regularly, so get comfortable with enacting all of them.
And this was a man who was 'planning' his comeback to music, and got shot in the street by a crazed fan instead. It does not affect the brilliance of his music, thankfully already recorded, it does however interrupt many of his 'plans' for what he would have done with the income from it.Life, is what happens to you, while you're busy making other plans. John Lennon
This advice does come from one who has been in the music industry in a number of roles successfully (financially & musically), and walked away from it in favour of letting it be for its own sake. I found more joy in giving it away!! and have never been homeless or without food, or stuck in work that I haven't enjoyed for its own sake.
No choice is wrong, it just brings a different experience, and wisdom -- that which you are asking for at your highest place of asking ... the topic heading.... can only be gained by experience. So, go for it - wisdom is what you will reap from your efforts regardless of how the music, or the business works out for you
Did you realise that is what you were really asking the universe for?
Please, don't think I'm putting cold water on your dreams, I'm not. Absolutely go for it, be aware of the opportunities in the universe merely by your choices, enjoy awarely - pour joy into both the business and the music, it is a gift to us all.
As an aside, after many years outside of the 'business' and having gone more into social justice and human rights as a life choice, I whispered to the universe that I was more wise now, more understanding of the effects of my music on others, more able to stand in my own space and not be controlled or manipulated for other's material gain, more able to handle the emotions in others, more able to not get carried away with the by-products of the industry, or to take the opinions of others - positive or negative - personally and absolutely more comfortable with accepting / changing or removing myself from a situation. I was ready to 'go public' again.
You cannot imagine the sense of humour the universe has, within two days a friend also involved in social justice and human rights called me and told me a small group were playing a gig at a local park and needed more voices, would I please come and sing with them. I thought - jam in a park, no big deal, sure, just what I asked for!! I rocked up knowing only one of the songs they were to sing but comfortable that I'd learn the other quickly. So I arrived - honestly expecting like a jam/busking session on the grass.... only to find it was instead a performance in the large auditorium, a very large crowd for a full on concert of notable muso's, and it was being filmed and beamed live into China... it was a concert celebrating the arrival of the human rights torch making its way the opposite way around the world to Beijing for the Olympics!!!
You just gotta laugh!!
We primarily sang... John Lennon's Imagine!!
When we unleash the potential with our willingness, the universe turns it all on. It's just a matter of hanging on for the ride!
