It's a little known fact that there is only "one learning algorithm" that processes sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch. If we were to wire our optic nerve up to our auditory cortex or somatosensory cortex we could still have vision. This demonstrates it doesn't matter what region of brain matter you will up nerves to... The same learning algorithm is used to work out how to process that sensory information.
