Aesthetic judgement and acceptance of what is

Post by tom66 » Thu Oct 11, 2018 6:53 pm

Eckhart Tolle has a line in Power of Now about "mind-dominated" music, art, and architecture generating - or perhaps as manifestations of - "ugliness" in the world. But elsewhere in PoN, the prevailing message of acceptance of what is would lead the reader to avoid constantly (perhaps absolutely) appraising her surroundings, and put a stop to the incessant thread of judgement along the lines of 'That's a nice car, that's an ugly weed, what a great color on that building, what an ugly billboard over there....'

We might ask how Mr. Tolle knows that the architect of a building really was "mind dominated" in its design, but aside from that, would not total acceptance superseded classifying the design and execution of buildings, music, paintings, etcetera?

Yes, let the mind wonder and judge, but observe it as it happens. What is important is being aware of the thoughts and appraisals that arise, for we are not the ones who create these thoughts, notice how they appear on their own. Eventually the incessant mind activity will cease when it is not being fed with identification.
