More on Ego

Post by quitesane » Tue May 31, 2005 5:09 pm

Recently, a teacher observed that I had developed an adversarial relationship with ego. He brought a clarity that has been helpful. It goes beyond the topical application. I paraphrase the exchange:

Teacher: So, what is ego?

Student: It is form, mistakenly invested with a sense of self or awareness.

Teacher: What is form?

Student: A molecular dance – an illusion.

Teacher: Does it contain space or being?

Student: Yes, of course.

Teacher: So the essence of form is being?

Student: Yes.

Teacher: And the misplaced awareness – is it being as well?

Student: Yes.

Teacher: And the mistake, what is that?

Student: Thoughts – mental labeling.

Teacher: And what are they?

Student: They are form… arising in consciousness - being.

Teacher: And so what about ego is not sacred?

Student: [Stunned silence]

Teacher: What about any thing is not sacred?

Student: [More stunned silence]

Teacher: Yes.
