Does Eckhart Talk of God

Post by Mouse » Fri Jun 11, 2010 2:17 pm

Please can anybody that knows Eckhart's teaching thoroughly tell me if he talks of having realised God or a supreme intelligence?
I have been inspired by Barry Long's teaching and I write this so as to acknowledge my source of inspiration. It is a wonderful help, and it is a wonderful gift.

Good question. Here's a quote from the Power of Now to get the ball rolling:

"The word God has become empty of meaning through thousands of years of misuse. I use it sometimes, but I do so sparingly. By misuse, I mean that people who have never even glimpsed at the realm of the sacred, the infinite vastness behind that word, use it with great conviction, as if they knew what they are talking about. Or, they argue against it, as if they knew what it is that they are denying."

I have never heard Tolle speak in the terms of 'having realised God or a supreme intelligence" at least not in a sense that such things exists apart from what we all already are.

Yes God is an emotionally charged concept to the masses.

But from that quote it could be interpreted that Tolle has realised the reality of Truth or God, to some degree, and has the knowledge of it.

"the infinite vastness behind that word"

There he has the knowledge of infinite vastness.

Thank you

I would say it's pretty clear that Tolle claims to have direct knowledge of infinite vastness; I have considerable confidence that he is genuine in his claim. It's just speculation on my part, but I don't get the impression that this direct knowledge would lead Tolle to say "there is a God" ~If he were to put it in those terms he'd probably say "there's nothing but God".

I too find Tolle endowed with the power to communicate the state beyond self, both in his words and presence, and I am keen to know his depth of realisation as there are many levels and corresponding depths of knowledge to the state of being.

I am glad that Tolle acknowledges the infinite vastness, the state behind existence, does he describe it as intelligent? I am sure he would, it is his own realised state.

I wonder if he is avoiding saying "I am one with God". It is one hell of a public statement, one is likely to get metaphorically crucified.

Any "state" is temporary and of this world. Tolle is about not identifying with any state.

And at one time, literally;

Ultimatley we already are One with God [Consciouness, Being, All,]
Talking to God implies there is You, and there's God [duality].
