Positive Self Talk

Is it possible to switch negative/intrusive thoughts/images for positive thoughts of your own choosing?

Sure. Thought can have momentum however, so if a negative thought gets cranked up pretty strong it may have to run its course. When this happens just be mindful that a runaway thought is in progress. Try to see it for what it is and when the energy subsides and becomes more manageable, laugh it off as just another runaway thought and return to something more positive. With a little practice you'll learn to get to them before they get so much momentum where they're easier to turn. Don't make a big deal out of it in any case. That's just more negative thought.

Would positive thinking/self talk qualify as conscious living?

Hey Athena, what a beautiful name :D

yes absolutely and don't let anyone tell you other wise. Yet, what I like to do, and I have a lot of experience with this from working with a neural re-wiring program, is to question where the thoughts are coming from. In A Course in Miracles and a lot of similar teachings, basically, your thoughts are either coming from Love (who you really are) or fear (ego).

So, if you are replacing negative thoughts with positive thoughts, take notice of how it feels. I tried to enforce affirmations for a while, and I didn't truly believe subconsciously what the affirmations were saying, because vibrationally, it was too far away from where I was. And I felt like I was just trying to force something to work and it didn't feel REAL. Same thing with visualizing. When I try/tried to force a visualization in order to get somewhere, it never felt real. When I did it with ease, it flowed. This is why positive thinking only works from a space of openness and alignment within the space of who you really are. It comes through surrender.

An easier method for me was first to recognize (have awareness) for what was there. What I have found so liberating is being able to recognize when I am lost in a limited story and understand why that story is there. Ahh, that was just an old belief system I took on early in life to keep me safe. Thank you, but we are safe now, and we can create something different. In that recognition, I can see that this was just an old perspective; an old belief that I took on that no longer serves me. With compassion, I can simply re-enforce to my subconscious that I don't need to believe that anymore, and instead, what feels MORE true? In other words, let me give you an example of what has not worked and what has worked.

This has NOT worked for me:

Old belief-I am alone, disconnected and cut off. I need love from other people and things to complete me.

New belief-I am perfect and whole and complete.

As you can see, I tried to enforce this new belief above and realized it simply wasn't sticking. It just didn't feel real enough for what was already playing in my subconscious for multiple decades because as WW says above, I already had massive momentum running from other thoughts. So, instead of trying to enforce new beliefs as in......(negative wrong, positive good), I have realized that trusting was my biggest issue. So this is what IS working for me:

Old Belief-I am alone, disconnected, and cut off. I need love from other people and things to complete me.

New "perspective'-What if I truly experientially move into this space of openness, completely let go, surrender, and ALLOW and trust that I am ALWAYS being guided by the higher part of myself. Let my experience prove it to me. What if every perceived negative experience was always a gateway into something miraculous and magnificent that my limited mind cannot even possibly comprehend because it simply wasn't designed to. So, every time my limited mind finds fault with my experience, it's always because it believes we are only this body/mind, and therefore, we are trapped, limited and alone, rather than seeing that even in the depths of being stuck in shit, I can choose to have faith in a larger perspective that will allow me immense inner peace right NOW, and with that inner peace, I can actually hear the guidance that is speaking to me, which I could not hear when I was trying to figure everything out from the ego mind.

As you can see, rather than just trying to affirm new thoughts, this new perspective above is far more expansive, and experientially 'real' to me. It's resistance/fear which is where the ego is always operating from, because it's scared and trying to protect you. While it is opennes and expansiveness, which is where YOU really reside. I hope this makes sense. I'd be glad to clarify on more if you'd like.

Thanks! I think it makes sense. :)

I find that I'm able to be mindful in solitude. But in social settings like at work or at a party, my fight or flight response turns on and I start having worrisome thoughts and images of being disrespected.

I don't feel safe around people.

Thoughts anyone?

So you can replace your thoughts with your own chosen thoughts? This isn't gonna backfire, potentially making it worse?

Here are some things to ponder:

The desire for change often times seems to come from a dissatisfaction over what you perceive yourself to be. It is far too easy to envision a better version of ourselves; one who doesn't think bad thoughts, one who doesn't get angry anymore, and one who is loving and happy - in a sense perfect. When we start to form this vision of a new us, we start to put up walls. We have a goal in mind of what we want to be, and we become more limited in our ability to experience life. Anything that falls outside of that vision is seen as a failure, and makes us feel at odds with ourselves. We will never be able to live up to this fictional version of ourselves that we have created, and eventually the frustration in trying to do so will cause us to give up and the illusion vanishes. This is the backfiring that you speak of; the realization that trying to be someone else is actually more exhausting than just having the bad thoughts by themselves.

Where does that desire to change come from? Why do you want to replace your thoughts? Who is it that wants to change the thoughts, and who is it that has the "bad" thoughts? Are they different or the same?

Instead, realize that the mind is like a series of performances taking place. You are the actors and the audience, and just like shows and movies in real life, you always have a choice over which ones you want to take part in. The power lies in realizing that they are performances, and that they aren't real. You can step off of a stage any time you want. You can say no, and refuse to be an actor in the plays that exhaust you. When you create a vision of a new you, you are creating a new play and acting it out, but this new play isn't any more real than the others.

Our thoughts are nothing but performances, based on events that happened a long time ago. Some of these performances are very old, and we've been acting in them for so long, that we believe that they are real, and we believe that the actors we play are really who we are. Imagine that there is a quiet space off of the stage, maybe a long, quiet hallway with steps going up to each stage. You can see all of the plays happening from this quiet space, but you're not taking part in them, just watching them. Understand that these plays all came about based on your experiences. When you were first born, there was nothing but the quiet space, and gradually through your life experiences, the stages were set, and the performances began. From this perspective you can see that you are the space from which you see these plays, you are the silence between them. There is no ideal version to reach for, there is nothing to become, it has always been there and always will be. This is a place that you can always visit if you choose. The plays will always be there, but you have a choice in which ones you will visit (Playing thoughts through in your mind and dwelling on them), and which ones you will let pass (standing off to the side and resting, not becoming an actor).

Great post, Admiral Akmir!

I enjoyed reading that.
