Am I a chicken?

Post by freedom » Fri Sep 05, 2008 1:07 pm

Hi all,

A man went to the doctors believing that he was a chicken and had a nasty case of feather rot which was giving him a lot of pain.
The Doc, being a rather enlightened charactor, thought mmm now I can either reinforce this chaps delusion and treat the feather rot or I can gently lead him to the truth of who he is therefore rendering all treatment unnessary.

What am I?

What am I?
You are certainly asking the right question freedom. Just don't look for words and ideas to know your answer as they can only serve as pointers. Too much definition can only result in more feather rot.

This reminds me of a cute story I heard told by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh at a retreat years ago i participated as a teenager.

A man was hospitalized because he was mentally ill with an affliction of identity crisis. He believed himself to be that of a pea.

Upon hospitalization, the doctor came and talked to him, explained to him through psychotherapy and rationalization that he is human. The doctor said: "You have an arm, eyes, nose, body, hair, a name, able to speak understandable language and work...a pea does not have this. All these characteristics makes you human."

After much convincing, the man finally agrees that he is human. To the doctor's prescription, he recites a daily mantra: "I am human, not a pea." many times a day and goes through the rationalization process over and over again about why he is human and not a pea.

Finally, after many months of therapy, the doctor asked him one day. "Who are you?"

The man replied: "I am human. I am a man."

Feeling confident about the prognosis that the man is better, the doctor was overjoyed and told him he would be able to leave the hospital to go home the next day.

The next day, the doctor walked the man out to the nursing station, while the nurse prepares the hospital release papers and the doctor signs them, a chicken walked by. With a loud scream, the man ran behind the nurse's desk and hide, his body covered with sweats and there was fears in his eyes.

With much dissapointment, the doctor realized that the man is not fit to be released from the hospital. After calming the man down, the doctor asked. "What happened? I thought you agree with me that you're not a pea, you cannot be eaten by a creature like the chicken, why are you then afraid of a chicken?"

The man replied: "I know doctor that you know and I know that I am human.....but the chicken doesn't know that!"
