How To Use Quotes

Post by phil » Sun Jan 01, 2006 8:32 pm

Some members have commented that using the quoting function of this forum can be confusing. That's a good point, it can be.

With that in mind, here's an easy way to properly quote other member's comments, without having to fuss around with the way this software works.

Just manually type the quote tags before and after the comments you wish to reference.

Like this:

Image

[quote ]relevant text being quoted here[/ quote]

but with no spaces anywhere between the quoting code brackets

(note: this is an update of Phil's instructions since you can no longer see what he was describing)

Note that the beginning and ending quote tag are the same, with the exception that the ending quote tag has a slash included.

The confusion comes in when trying to use the forum software to generate these tags. If we type the quote tags manually, this removes this point of confusion.

Personally, I feel proper quoting will do much to make the forum more readable.

Quoted comments will look like this:

Some people are fussy about quote formating!

Hope this is helpful!

Thanks, Phil.

Have another question about quotes - using your example -

In some posts, "<the person's name> wrote" replaces the word "quote". How does one do that?

OK, good question.

To indicate the person you are quoting, you type the first quote tag like this:

You would of course replace "phil" with the name of the real poster.

The following update is added so we can see what phil has done:

[quote ="phil"]text being quoted[/ quote]

Again, there should be no spaces anywhere between the brackets of the quoting code. If done properly it should look like this:

It works! Phil you are so good at explaining these things to where even inepts-at-this-sort-of-thing like me can get it!

What a good service you are doing, with both the quotes and the images. For the technically-challenged, it's wonderful!

Excellent!

just a suggestion

In case you want to use pieces of words, phrases from another person's post in many places, but does not want to use the quote (which would break the flow of the post), then you can first acknowledge that person's post (give it a color), then coloring all the places in your post that you want to give that person credit.

I just select and copy the text, click the quote button, and when you do that the cursor is put between the code, then just paste (crtl+v), and it's done. Easy.
And if you want to cite the author, just do [quote="name"] before the quote tag.
